The I03 Optical Wheel is a piece of outdoor educational equipment with a rotating disc printed with an optical illusion pattern. In motion the pattern comes alive: lines ripple, circles bulge and sink, and the child changes the effect simply by the speed of rotation. It works well in nurseries, schools and public spaces.
It all starts with spinning the disc and stepping back two metres. The pattern is printed and still, but in motion the eye can no longer keep up with the repeating lines, and the brain fills in the rest: the surface ripples, the centre draws you inwards, the colours shift to a different shade. A different speed gives a different effect, and moving your gaze to the grass or a wall right after it stops gives yet another. From there it is a short step to talking about how seeing is not passively receiving an image but joint work by the eye and the brain - and children who have traced this once can then design their own illusion wheel.
For the illusion to keep working after several seasons, the print must not fade. The graphics are printed on self-adhesive film protected by a UV-resistant laminate, and the frame is made of galvanised, powder-coated steel that withstands rain and frost. The wheel stays outdoors all year round, with no need to put it away for the winter, and it is covered by a warranty. The manufacturer is EduPlayground, and the wheel is made in Poland.
Practising careful looking
To see the effect, you have to look at one point for longer than usual. Playing with the optical wheel therefore trains observation, concentration and focus - cognitive skills usually practised at a desk, here practised at a piece of equipment outdoors.
The hand drives, the eye follows
Keeping the disc moving takes rhythmic pushes of the hand while looking at the centre at the same time. This combination trains hand-eye coordination: the hand works at the pace the eye sets.
A quiet moment at the disc
Watching a slowly spinning pattern works differently from running around: it calms, settles and helps release tension after a noisy break. For some children, the optical wheel is simply a place where they can stop for a while.
What makes up the optical wheel
Four elements: one creates the illusion, and three give it movement, a replaceable disc and a height chosen at installation.
Disc with an illusion pattern
The design is chosen when ordering from sixteen geometric illusions, so two wheels standing side by side can show completely different illusions. The graphics are printed on self-adhesive film and protected by a UV-resistant laminate.
Rotation mechanism
The wheel turns on bearings, so after a single push it spins for a long time and smoothly - and smoothness decides whether the illusion appears at all. The mechanism needs no electricity or batteries.
Magnetic disc mounting
The panel is held on by a magnet, so one design can be swapped for another without tools. The same post can later take a themed disc - health, ecology, emotions, space - and the equipment turns into a task game.
Height set during installation
The height of the post is set during installation, and with the optical wheel this matters twice over: the illusion works best when the viewer's eye is roughly level with the centre of the disc.
Disc designs
Which illusion goes on the disc
The sixteen versions differ only in the geometric illusion printed on the disc; the rest of the equipment is the same in each. When ordering, just give the design number from this grid.

Another design does not mean another piece of equipment: just give the number and order the ‘Replaceable Magnet - Optical Wheel (Selected Design)’, code I03-AP1.
Personalisation
Wheel in a colour of your choice with a custom sticker
Personalisation covers how the wheel looks, not how it works. The frame and disc can look different, while the turning mechanism stays the same.
Sticker with custom graphics
Instead of a ready-made graphic, the disc carries a sticker made to order. Its content and layout are agreed with the customer, so the disc can show things not found among the ready-made designs.
Colour
The colour of the frame can be adapted to order - a frequent request. The scope of the change is agreed with an adviser. Standard colour according to the product data sheet: green (RAL 6018).
