U-shaped worktop
The worktop is where all the play happens: pots, pans, sticks and natural ingredients. It also gives room to projects that need space - finished ‘bakes’ are pushed to one side and there is straight away room to start the next ones.

Mud and workshop zone
The S01 Eco-Kitchen is an outdoor mud kitchen with a shared U-shaped worktop. Stainless steel basins, a shelf and a set of metal pots and pans let children mix mud, pour sand, cook with leaves, draw and experiment. It works well in nurseries, schools, therapy practices and education centres.
Product description
The ingredients in this kitchen don't come from a shop - they lie around the playground and change with the seasons: flower petals in spring, sand and mud in summer, leaves in autumn, snow in winter. On the same worktop a child scoops earth into a pot, adds water and stirs until the mixture holds together, and at other times a drawing or a simple experiment takes shape here. The idea itself is not new: it runs from Montessori's vessels of 1907, through the Reggio Emilia pre-schools, to British messy play. Natural material never behaves the same way twice - sometimes runny, sometimes thick - so the child tests it afresh instead of repeating the same movement.
For this play to go on for years, the kitchen has to withstand any weather. The steel frame is protected by galvanising and powder coating, and the basins are made of stainless steel, which does not rust and washes clean. The worktop is finished with HPL board, an exceptionally tough material: it does not absorb water or scratch, and it withstands rain, frost and sun. The Eco-Kitchen works outdoors all year round, winter included, and is covered by a warranty. The manufacturer is EduPlayground, and the kitchen is made in Poland.
Children work side by side, not in a queue: one cooks, another brings leaves, a third serves ‘dishes’ to the guests. Working together at one piece of equipment makes it easier to interact and brings the group together, and the children agree their roles among themselves.
Scooping, tipping, pouring and kneading build finger precision, needed later for holding a pen and doing up buttons. In a single game the hands touch a dozen or more textures at once - direct training for the nervous system.
The worktop is also used for artwork, simple experiments and practical technology activities, and the kitchen itself can become a market stall or a shop. So one piece of equipment serves several kinds of activity, including ones that usually need a table and room to spread out.
Four elements: the worktop and two basins form the workspace, the shelf and pots supply its tools.
The worktop is where all the play happens: pots, pans, sticks and natural ingredients. It also gives room to projects that need space - finished ‘bakes’ are pushed to one side and there is straight away room to start the next ones.
In one basin hands pound mud and stir a brew of leaves and petals; in the other, dry sand is poured. The basins have no drain, so water stays where it was poured; the whole basin lifts out to be emptied and washed.
The shelf fits onto the kitchen, so it can be moved and set up in different places around it - wherever play is happening. It holds pots, art supplies and experiment accessories, all within reach.
The set includes mini dishes, pots and pans in stainless steel. A metal pot feels heavier in the hand and knocks against the worktop differently from a plastic one, and after play it is washed like an ordinary dish and goes back on the shelf.
Where there is no water connection nearby, the Eco-Kitchen can be fitted with a water container on a metal stand that feeds the kitchen tap. The container is filled by hand or with collected rainwater, so water, sand and mud play works without plumbing too. Our adviser will be happy to tailor the add-on and its installation to your playground.
