The S06 Painting Wall is an outdoor easel: a transparent polycarbonate panel in a steel frame. Both sides of the panel take paint, felt-tip pens and mud, so children paint facing each other, trace through the panel what they see, and the picture wipes off with a cloth. It works well in nurseries, schools and therapy practices.
A transparent panel turns painting into a conversation
The name says ‘wall’, but in fact it is a transparent panel - and the whole idea lies in that transparency. A child painting on one side sees, through their own picture, the face of someone standing on the other side, so they paint towards another person instead of staring at a blank surface. This is what art therapy - supporting development through art - is based on: it is easier for a child to draw an emotion than to name it, and on the panel that drawing takes shape between two people. Transparent easels have long stood in art studios, where children paint face to face; the painting wall brings that panel out to the playground.
The painting wall is outdoor equipment and works all year round: in rain, in frost and in full sun. The frame is made of galvanised, powder-coated steel - two layers that keep moisture away from the metal. There is no glass in the frame - it holds polycarbonate, which is hard to crack or break. The wall is covered by a warranty. The manufacturer is EduPlayground, and the equipment is made in Poland.
A drawing you can always fix
The surface is washable, so the first line does not decide the whole picture: what did not work comes off in a few seconds and the drawing starts again. On the panel there is no single final version of the picture and no used-up sheet of paper.
Movement with the whole arm, not just the fingers
The panel stands upright and has a large surface, so you paint at it standing up, moving the whole arm from the shoulder. Aiming the brush at a particular spot links what the eye sees with the movement of the hand - the same coordination that later guides a pencil along a letter.
Two children facing each other
Two children paint at the panel at once and can see each other the whole time, so they agree things between themselves without a go-between: who starts, who adds the background, who waits. The shared picture only comes together once the children have divided up the space on the panel.
What the wall is made of
Five elements: some decide what can be painted, others how long the wall will last.
Transparent polycarbonate panel
You can see through the panel to what is on the other side, so a child can put a brush to the panel and trace the outline of a friend standing opposite, or the outline of a tree and a roof from the real view. This is how a drawing is made straight from the view.
Painting on both sides of the panel
Each side of the panel takes paint, so two children paint at the same time, standing opposite each other. One puts the sky at the top, the other draws a house beneath it, and through the panel they see both pictures at once the whole time.
Washable panel surface
The smooth, non-porous panel does not soak up paint the way paper does - the colour sits on the surface and comes off with a damp cloth. The surface takes poster paints, dry-wipe markers, mud from a puddle and even paint made in the classroom from flour, water and food colouring.
Height-adjustable frame
The height of the panel in the frame can be adjusted, so one piece of equipment serves both the youngest group and older children. An adult can work at the same panel too: a teacher or therapist leading the session from the other side.
Anchoring in the ground
The frame is held by anchors concreted into the ground, so the panel stays still when a brush and a hand lean against it. The wall stays in the playground permanently - it is not carried into the classroom after lessons or put away for the winter.
