It all starts with two rotating wheels. At the ‘Sort the waste’ wheel, the child turns it and matches a picture of waste to the right bin: paper, glass, metals and plastics, or bio. With every turn, the ‘Waste tips’ wheel reveals another tip. The print teaches the rest - the life cycle infographic and the waste decomposition timeline. Why put it all together? Because the product life cycle, the journey of a thing from being made, through being used, to decomposing or going back into circulation, is too long for a child to see as a whole. The board shortens it to a single glance and shows that throwing something in the bin does not end that journey, but starts it.
For the same graphics to stay legible after several seasons, the board has to withstand rain, frost and sun. The print is protected with UV-resistant varnish, so the colours do not fade. The frame is galvanised and powder-coated: the zinc protects the steel from corrosion, and the powder coating holds its colour and does not peel. The moving parts are made of metal that does not rust, so the wheels and the pointer turn after winter just as they did on the day of installation. The board works outdoors all year round and is covered by a warranty. The manufacturer is EduPlayground, and the board is made in Poland.
Four elements of the board and one add-on - each has its own job in the lessons.
