G85 Globe - 85 cm

The G85 Globe is a model of the Earth set up outdoors: a sphere 85 cm in diameter with the continents in raised relief. It turns on an axis, so the planet can be seen from every side, and the continents can be read with the fingers - even with eyes closed. It stands in schools, therapy practices and science centres.

Product description

The Earth as a sphere you can feel under your fingers

It all starts with a hand on the sphere: the child runs a finger along a coastline, stops at a mountain range, then pushes the sphere to see what lies on the other side of the Earth. The globe turns on its axis - it won't move by itself; the child spins it with their own hands. Where did the idea of seeing the world as a sphere come from? The oldest surviving globe, Martin Behaim's ‘Erdapfel’ from 1492, was made to show a shape that a paper map cannot: a sphere has no edges, so land and oceans sit in relation to each other as they really do. The outdoor globe has relief, so the world can not only be seen but also explored by touch.

The globe stays outdoors all year round - there is no need to put it in storage for the winter. The frame is steel, galvanised and powder-coated: the zinc layer under the paint protects the steel from rust where water collects after rain, and the powder coating withstands frost and summer sun. The equipment's durability is backed by a warranty. The manufacturer is EduPlayground, and the globe is made in Poland.

A model of the Earth in the playground

Geography gets a physical model: continents and oceans are there to point at, not to imagine from a screen. The globe stands outdoors as a permanent place for lessons: there is no need to carry it into the classroom or book a specialist room.

Continents read with the fingers

The surface of the globe has a varied texture, so the hand gets a stimulus that a smooth object does not give. The child learns the shape of the land by touch, not by sight alone - which is why the globe also works well in therapy practices.

The sphere turns, the group stands round it

The child brings the continent they are looking for round to face them - a push of the sphere is all it takes. The globe has no front or back, so the group stands around it and each child follows the rotation from their own side.

What makes up the globe

Five elements: two you can feel under your fingers, the third makes it turn, the fourth anchors the globe, and the fifth shows how the sphere is made.

Raised relief of the continents

The continents stand out from the surface of the sphere, and the relief reproduces the lie of the land - the hand reads the same information as contour lines on a map, only instantly and without a key. As an option, holes for screw-in figures can be placed in the surface.

A sphere for every season

The sphere is durable and frost-resistant, so it stays outdoors all year round. Its surface is certified as fire-resistant. Tiny pores are traces of air from production, which is why every sphere is unique.

Axis of rotation in a steel frame

The sphere is mounted on an axis and turns around it: one push of the hand is enough to see every corner of the planet. The steel frame holds it above the ground and connects the equipment to the anchor - the continents are in front of the child, not under their feet.

Steel anchor set in the ground

The equipment is fixed permanently: the steel anchor is set in the ground and concreted in, and the anchor is joined to the globe with bolts or chemical anchors. The anchor is galvanised, so contact with damp ground does not damage it.

A sphere made of two hemispheres

The sphere is made from two hemispheres joined during production. The joint may be visible on the surface as a faint line. It is a natural trace of the way the sphere is made, not a change that has appeared through use.

Personalisation

Outdoor globe in a colour made to order

The colour of the globe can be matched to the place where it will stand, not the other way round. Personalisation changes how the equipment looks, not how it works: the sphere still turns on its axis.

  • Any colour for the sphere and frame

As standard, the frame is black (RAL 9005) and the sphere is multicoloured. To order, the sphere and frame can be any colour. The whole globe can be black, for a hotel for example, or gold. An adviser will agree the details with you.
