Head opening
The child doesn't look at the pattern from outside - they slip their head inside and become part of it. A grimace or a smile is enough to change the ring of repeated faces in an instant.

Optics, illusions and experiments
The I08 Kaleidoscope is an outdoor optical unit that you put your head inside. The mirrors inside turn a face, a hand or a coloured leaf held up to them into a symmetrical pattern that rearranges itself with every movement of the head. It works well in nurseries, schools, hospitals and public spaces.
Product description
Play starts by slipping your head inside. What you see then looks like a crowd of identical twins standing in a circle, although only one child is inside. Just watching the slowly shifting symmetrical pattern is calming - one of those moments in the playground when a child simply stops. What is a kaleidoscope? Not magic, just physics older than playgrounds: the first one was built by the Scottish physicist David Brewster while studying reflections of light in mirrors, and he patented it in 1817. He made up the name from three Greek words: kalos (beautiful), eidos (shape) and skopeo (I look), meaning ‘observer of beautiful shapes’.
For the pattern to be enjoyed for years, the equipment has to withstand any weather. The frame is steel, galvanised and powder-coated, so rain, frost and sun leave no rust on it, and the kaleidoscope works outdoors all year round, winter included. The pattern is made by daylight alone - once installed, there is nothing to switch on or power, and the whole unit is covered by a warranty. The manufacturer is EduPlayground, and the kaleidoscope is made in Poland.
Looking at symmetrical reflections, the child practises picking out patterns, shapes and colours. It is the same attentiveness that later helps tell similar letters and numbers apart when learning to read and write begins.
The same order the child sees in the mirrors is found in a butterfly's wing, a snowflake and a daisy. So lessons on symmetry, the line of reflection and the angle of incidence start with an image, not with a definition on the board.
The pattern depends on who is standing inside and what they have just held up to the mirrors, so each child sees something different. Children take turns and describe what they saw - and comparing these accounts practises descriptive language and careful listening.
Four elements - the pattern comes from how they are positioned in relation to each other.
The child doesn't look at the pattern from outside - they slip their head inside and become part of it. A grimace or a smile is enough to change the ring of repeated faces in an instant.
The secret of the pattern lies in how the mirrors are set: the reflection from one falls into the next, that one into another, and so on round and round. The smaller the angle between the mirrors, the more repeats you see at once - one face breaks up into a dozen or more identical ones.
The mirrors are made of polished stainless steel. This surface does not shatter or leave sharp fragments, so a child can put their head between the mirrors without risk.
The closed-profile frame holds the mirrors in a fixed position, and the whole pattern depends on that position: if the angle shifted, the reflections would no longer form a symmetrical image. The rigid structure makes sure the pattern looks the same years later.
