Two drums of different sizes
There are two drums, differing in diameter and height, so each speaks with its own voice. Two people play the set at once: an adult shows the basic rhythm and the child plays along.

The M01 Drums are a set of two percussion instruments for outdoor use. The membrane stretched over a cylindrical body responds to every strike with the palm, the fingertips or a stick, and with two drums, two people can play together. They work well in nurseries, schools, therapy practices and public spaces.
Product description
It all starts with a strike. The hand hits the membrane, the membrane vibrates, the ear hears a tone - and that is the whole mechanism of an instrument from the membranophone family, the percussion instruments with a membrane. The gentler the strike, the longer the sound rings on, so a child at the drum trains not only the hand but also careful listening. Why this instrument in a playground? The drum appeared in the Neolithic, around ten thousand years ago, made of hide stretched over a tree trunk or a clay pot: in Africa it carried messages over kilometres, in Asia it accompanied rituals, in Europe it kept armies marching in step.
Drums for children that stand in a nursery, school or hospital playground all year round have to withstand rain, frost and sun. The frame is steel, galvanised and powder-coated, so it does not rust, and the membrane - the part that takes every strike - is made of HDPE plastic, not hide like drums of old. The sound comes only from the vibrating membrane, so playing needs no electricity or speaker, and the set works straight after installation. The drums are covered by a warranty. The manufacturer is EduPlayground, and the drums are made in Poland.
Research at Northwestern University (Kraus, 2014) showed that children who play percussion instruments are better at telling speech sounds apart, and this makes learning to read easier. Rhythm is also the foundation of counting and of sentence intonation.
A single strike combines three actions: the eye judges the distance, the brain plans the force, the hand makes the movement. Playing with both hands in turn trains the coordination that later manual skills rely on - from writing to throwing a ball.
Rhythm engages the cerebellum and the motor cortex together with the auditory centres, which is why music therapy can be effective for children with autism, ADHD and difficulties with concentration. The drum also offers a safe outlet for excess energy.
Five elements of the set - each responsible for a different part of what you hear.
There are two drums, differing in diameter and height, so each speaks with its own voice. Two people play the set at once: an adult shows the basic rhythm and the child plays along.
The membrane is the source of the sound: when struck, it vibrates and slowly settles. A palm sounds soft and warm, a hard stick sharp, fingertips different again - the same drum changes its voice depending on what you strike it with.
One membrane gives two different sounds: the centre sounds low, the edge higher. This is the simplest acoustic experiment on this equipment - just move your hand from the centre to the edge to hear that where you strike changes the tone.
The body under the membrane is not just a base for the instrument to stand on. It is a resonance chamber: the membrane's vibration spreads inside and comes back amplified, which is why even a light tap of a finger can be heard.
The drum does not give way under the hand: the steel frame is bolted to anchors set in the ground, so the instrument stays put even during hard playing. Nobody can knock it over, move it or take it away from the playground.
