Musical and sensory panels
Two large acoustic tubes, both tall, make up the outdoor N04-L Chinese Whispers L. The conversation runs over a distance - the speaker stands at one station, the listener at the other, at a different point in the playground. It works well in schools, education centres, public spaces and holiday resorts.

Chinese Whispers works against its name: a whisper spoken into the funnel of one tube can be heard clearly at the funnel of the other, even though the children are standing in different parts of the playground. A low voice carries through the tube better than a high one. Why does a whisper travel so far? The tube is a waveguide - it confines the sound wave to a single channel and leads it straight to the listener's ear, instead of letting it spread out in all directions. The game itself is older than the equipment: children have played Chinese whispers for generations, and a message that changes along the way is still the shortest lesson in what gossip is.
For talking through the tubes to keep working for years, the equipment has to withstand every kind of weather: rain, frost and sun. The frame is galvanised and powder-coated, so moisture leaves no rust on it, and the tubes stay outdoors all year round - there is no need to put them in storage for the winter. The sound is carried by the tube itself, with no power, batteries or electronics, so frost does not stop the fun and there is nothing to replace after the season. The equipment has a declaration of conformity and a certificate from an accredited body in line with the EN 1176-1 safety standard, and is covered by a warranty. The manufacturer is EduPlayground, and the Chinese Whispers is made in Poland.
Children observe how sound travels at the tubes without any instruments - they hear the difference between a word spoken into the air and the same word sent into the funnel. After play like this, it is easier to build your own cup-and-string phone.
The message has to be repeated exactly as it was heard - otherwise the game loses its point. Careful listening is a condition of the game here, not a teacher's instruction, and that is exactly how the tubes train auditory perception and concentration.
You can't play at the tubes alone: the conversation only starts when someone stands at the other tube. Playing together brings children closer, makes it easier to get to know new people in the group and teaches them to respond calmly when the message comes back changed.
Four elements: two carry the voice from mouth to ear, and the other two set the height of the tubes and fix them in the ground.
The same opening is used for both: first you whisper into it from close up, without touching the rim, then you put your ear to it and wait for the answer. The conversation goes back and forth, and after each round the child swaps roles.
Sound travels between the tubes through a pipe laid underground, so there are no wires or cables on the surface. The stations can be set up to 10 m apart - the lawn, path and play area between them stay clear.
The family comes in three versions: two large tubes, two small ones or a mixed pair. Large ones go where older pupils talk, small ones where pre-schoolers come up to the funnel, and the mixed pair brings both heights into one conversation.
Each station is set on anchors concreted into the ground - a permanent installation, not portable kit. The tube stands firm when a child leans on it, and play needs no preparation - just walk up to the funnel and say the first word.
