The MS01 Musical - Sensory Panel is an outdoor educational unit with two zones: visual and musical. Coloured panes, steel triangles, brass tubes and gongs let children change the colour of the world, name shapes and play on metal. It works well in nurseries, schools, therapy practices and public spaces.
The science of light and the science of sound in one frame
It all starts at the coloured panes. Each one lets only part of the light through to the eye and holds back the rest, so the grass, the sky and the faces of friends on the other side change colour. On the musical side of the panel the same curiosity turns into sound: a beater taps the metal and the ear hears a tone. How do we know it is science and not just banging on metal? More than three hundred years ago Isaac Newton split white light into colours with a glass prism, and two and a half thousand years ago Pythagoras described how the pitch of a sound depends on the size of the vibrating object. The panel shows both at once, with no screen and no electricity.
For these experiments to stay repeatable for years, the panel has to withstand any weather: rain, frost and sun. The frame is galvanised and powder-coated, the instruments are made of metals that do not rust, and instead of glass there is safe plexiglass. The panel works outdoors all year round, winter included, and is covered by a warranty. The manufacturer is EduPlayground, and the panel is made in Poland.
Sight trained by colour
The panel stimulates children's sight: looking through one pane after another, the child compares shades and learns to notice differences. Sensitivity to colour belongs to the same category of sensory perception as sensitivity to sound, and colours affect mood and emotions.
Hearing, precision and both hemispheres
Playing the instruments gets both hemispheres of the brain working, and trains fine motor skills and precision. Telling sounds apart builds the foundation of a musical ear, which also helps in learning languages, where intonation matters.
Enough instruments for an orchestra
There are several instruments, so several children can play at the panel: one keeps the rhythm, one adds a high note, one waits for their turn. Playing together trains teamwork and communication, because the melody only comes together when the children agree.
What's inside the panel
Six elements: some change the colour of the world, others turn a strike into sound.
Panes cut into geometric shapes
Ten panes, each cut into a different shape: circle, triangle, square, trapezium and hexagon. So one piece of equipment can host both a lesson on colour and a geometry lesson - the shapes can be named, their sides counted and the repeats spotted.
Stainless steel triangles
A triangle bent from stainless steel rod sounds high and short. The lighter the strike, the purer the tone - the metal only needs a tap to vibrate, so gentle playing sounds better than hard.
Brass tubes
The brass tubes sound low and long. The bigger and longer the element, the slower it vibrates and the lower it sounds, so instruments played in order form a staircase of sounds - from the highest right down to the bottom.
Brass and stainless steel gongs
The gongs are made of two different metals: brass and stainless steel. Same gesture, different material, different sound - the simplest way to hear that sound depends not only on shape but also on what a thing is made of.
Hung on stainless steel cable
All the fixings are made of stainless steel cable, so each instrument hangs freely instead of sitting in a rigid holder. Struck metal can vibrate fully, and the note rings out instead of dying away in the fixing.
Beater included
We supply the panel with a beater, so playing starts as soon as it is installed. For quieter play, a muffled beater can be added - same gesture, softer sound.
