The S04 Sensory Panel is outdoor equipment for learning about colour and light. Windows of coloured plexiglass in the shape of geometric figures let children see the playground in a single colour and count sides and corners, and in the sun they cast coloured shadows on the ground. It works well in nurseries, schools, therapy practices and hospitals.
Coloured windows turn the playground into a lesson about light
Just put an eye to the red window and the whole playground changes colour. The filter lets mainly light of its own colour through to the eye and dims the rest, so the green grass fades, the sky darkens and a red jacket positively blazes. Where does the change come from? White sunlight only looks colourless - it holds all the colours of the rainbow, as Isaac Newton proved in 1666 by splitting a ray with a glass prism. Looking through coloured glass has an even older tradition: in the stained-glass windows of Gothic cathedrals, like the 12th-century one in Chartres, the sun painted the stone interior with a colour no ordinary window could give.
Sensory panels for children in a nursery, school or hospital playground have to show colour for years, so the frame must withstand rain, frost and sun. It is galvanised and powder-coated, and the coloured fillings are made of plexiglass. The panel stands outdoors all year round, winter included, and is covered by a warranty. The manufacturer is EduPlayground, and the panel is made in Poland.
Colour as a stimulus, in therapy too
Colours affect mood and emotions, and sensitivity to colour belongs to the same category of sensory perception as sensitivity to sound - hence colour therapy. At the panel, the child doses this stimulus themselves: they move on to the next window and the view changes colour.
A reason to talk about what you see
Children stand at different filters and tell each other what the sky looks like through yellow and what it looks like through green. Comparing views encourages them to name colours and build sentences about what they see - because everyone sees a little differently.
A first experiment without a laboratory
The panel teaches the order that every investigation rests on: observe, change one thing, check the result. The child looks through one filter, then another, compares the views and names the difference themselves - with no instruments, electricity or screen.
What the panel does with light
Light from the coloured windows paints shapes on the ground, reaches the eye, moves with the sun and lands on your hand.
Coloured shadows on the ground
On a sunny day the panel casts a shadow on the ground, and the light passing through the coloured plexiglass draws coloured shapes within it. The child looks for which window each shape comes from and compares two features at once: colour and shape.
Windows in geometric shapes
The windows are shapes: a circle, an oval, a triangle, a square, a trapezium, a parallelogram and an octagon, and through each one the playground looks a single colour. The child counts the sides with a finger and discovers that the square, the trapezium and the parallelogram each have four, though they differ in shape.
Shapes that travel with the sun
During the day the sun changes position in the sky, and the coloured shapes travel with it across the ground. When the sun is low, they stretch out and the circle becomes an oval. The child marks a shape with a pebble and an hour later measures with their feet how far it has moved.
A coloured shape on your hand
The child holds a hand in the light from a window and the coloured shape moves from the ground onto the hand. As they move the hand towards the window, the colour stays on it all the time, because light travels in straight lines - the same phenomenon explains every shadow.
